View Profile

Established in 1980, Twiga Tours begins its 33rd year as a luxury Inbound Safari Operator in East Africa. We have deliberately confined ourselves to this region of Africa as this is the land of our birth and we want to focus all our love and attention on our guests’ experiences in our homeland rather than pretend to be experts of 53 countries of Africa

The Premier Safari Operator

It seems so ancient yet it is only 34 years ago, in 1980, when Rajab and Minaz established an office in a suburb of Nairobi. The joy of living in Africa and the passion to show their homeland was far too tempting to miss and both left their chosen career to start an office from humble beginnings. Back then few locals had ventured into tourism which was considered the preserve of the multinationals and the pair knew that to succeed they would have to be different, be creative, fun to be with but, above all, provide an unmatched safari experience that would surpass the expectations of even the most discerning guests. Armed with expert local knowledge of East Africa and their traditional warm African hospitality the pair embarked on their challenging journey.

Along the way the pair continued to excel and carve out a name for themselves as the only safari operator who would willingly provide warm and personal hospitality to their visiting guests. In addition, Rajab and Minaz had a special way with their guests - they would pop open a bottle of champagne to welcome all their arriving guests, took the time to celebrate any special occasion, opened up their family home to share a meal and to hear stories from their excited guests before giving them a warm send off. Their firsts were endless and, today, Twiga Tours is recognized as a leader in the safari industry! Their creativity, personal honesty, integrity and warmth played the most significant role in this major success of the company.

Today, the company has established its headquarters in Nairobi and centralised its booking system to make it easy and convenient for its partners around the world to send one e-mail for any bookings or enquires for the region rather than having to deal with several individual offices. In addition, to ensure smooth operations of our safari programs the company has fully staffed and strategically located operational offices in Mombasa and Arusha. The company is also IATA accredited and has 3 retail offices to serve the needs of the local corporate and leisure travellers.

MORE THAN JUST A GUIDE

Our Guide-Drivers are by far the best in East Africa, not just for their knowledge and understanding of their country, the wealth of knowledge they possess on the abundant wildlife, flora and fauna and the rich and vibrant cultures of East Africa, but as affable travelling companions. Our guide-drivers understand that in order for our guests’ to fully appreciate the destination they need to spend ‘quality time’ with the wildlife, interact with the local people and marvel at interesting places. Thus, our guide-drivers will never rush them in order to conclude the program. They will, instead, allow our guests’ ample time to fully enjoy and savour those wonderful moments and take as many photographs as one would wish and will only leave at the behest of their guests.

They are in our full time employment and, given that they are our company’s ambassadors, we consider it extremely vital to ‘invest’ in our important human resources. We have regular training sessions for our guide-drivers and have designed a rigorous training curriculum that includes safe driving, safety and comfort of our guests, basic photographic skills to list just a few. This guarantees our guests’ continue to enjoy a memorable visit to our Africa. Besides being fluent in English and Kiswahili (our local language) most of our guide-drivers also speak a third language such as Chinese, French, German,Spanish etc. We know we have set high standards of service in the industry and are proud that this is not only appreciated by our guests but is also acknowledged by the industry.

Hotel facilities at the Stanley include 225 luxurious rooms with private bathroom and shower, hair dryer, three telephones, TV with CNN, BBC, M-Net, Super-sport and three movie channels. The rooms are all individually air-conditioned and have double-glazed windows, safe and minibar in the rooms. There are sixteen suites with three whirlpool tubs, 38 Sarova Club rooms, three restaurants, valet service, 24 hour room service, security service, chemist, travel desk, large shopping complex and a fully equipped health club with a sauna, steam bath, swimming pool and daily fitness classes.   Mbweha Safari Camp Tucked away in the spectacular vastness of The Great Rift Valley on a private 6400 acre Congreve Conservancy, Mbweha Camp is nestled up against the southern border of Lake Nakuru National Park with beautiful views of the Eburu and Mau Ranges. Ten cottages built of lava stone and thatched makuti roof add glamour and style to its contemporary African ambience with clever use of indigenous artefacts, fabric and modern cooking pots. Every cottage, styled individually, is surrounded by Candelabra Euphorbia, yellow barked Acacia and other indigenous trees that provide a relaxed atmosphere as you listen to the African night sounds of a lion roar or the laughter of the hyena in the distance. Bush walks, night game drives, sun-downer or bush breakfast and hot air ballooning over the spectacular Great Rift Valley and the lakes below are additional activities that you can enjoy and enhance your stay in truly remarkable and authentic African setting.   Tipilikwani Luxury Tented Camp As the maxim goes: Location! Location! Location! Set on the banks of the Talek River and overlooking the Mara plains, Tipilikwani Camp has one of the most spectacular views available. Set in the middle of what is considered the greatest wildlife reserve in Africa, Maasai Mara is home to one of the modern wonders of the world; the wildebeest migration as well as home to the Big Five. Enjoy an alfresco breakfast by the Talek River or a cold refreshing drink over a spectacular sunset or experience fine dining by candlelight all overlooked by carefully trained attentive staff. During the day, search for lions, cheetah, elephant, leopard, black rhino, giraffe, zebra, hippo and over 500 resident bird species including larks, sunbirds and the Lilac- Breasted Roller This is the Tipilikwani Experience..   Serengeti Sopa Lodge Looking out over the seemingly endless Serengeti plains, this hillside lodge is a tranquil oasis set in over 14,000 sq kms (5,000 sq miles) of National Park. The Serengeti plains are host to a dramatic annual migration of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and numerous other species of animals indigenous to the area. Opened in 1992, the lodge can accommodate 170 guests in 79 suites, each enjoying wall-to-wall carpeting, a private lounge with a mini bar, a bedroom with two queen size beds and ample room for a third, an en-suite bathroom with shaver sockets and a hair dryer, and a private verandah which offers stunning views over the plains. The lodge has direct-dial satellite telephone facilities as well as satellite television and wildlife-video-film options. A numbers of lodge electrical generating systems provide 240volts, 50 cycles 24 hours a day. Our water supply comes from nearby springs but guests are advised not to drink from the taps. Instead, complimentary bottled mineral water is provided in the mini bars while further stocks are available for sale in the main bar. We welcome kids of all ages and can provide both special meals at convenient times and baby sitters on request. Our guest shop stocks a wide selection of curios, gift items, clothing, film, sweets, postcards, personal requisites and toiletries, while the other offers gemstones, jewelry and other more unusual items. The double size pool offers a refreshing interlude between game drives as well as wonderful views over the rolling plains of the Serengeti. Also, we can supply diesel and can carry out most minor repairs.   Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge Spread out along the uppermost, eastern rim of the Ngorongoro World Heritage Site, the lodge offers breathtaking views of the crater floor far below. A day’s safari through this unique conservation area provides you with spectacular and memorable game viewing experiences. The lodge is located on Lemala Hill on the uppermost, eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, a World Heritage Site, in the volcanic highlands of northern Tanzania. The crater forms part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area which covers 8,300sq kms (3,200 sq. miles). Opened in 1992, the lodge can accommodate 190 guests in 92 suites, each enjoying wall-to-wall carpeting, central heating, a private lounge with a mini bar, a bedroom with two queen size beds and ample room for a third, an en-suite bathroom with shaver sockets and a hair dryer, and a private solarium which offers stunning views either down into the crater floor below or of the setting sun over the western horizon. Communications: The lodge has direct-dial satellite telephone facilities as well as satellite television and wildlife-video-film options. A number of lodge electrical generating systems provide 240volts, 50 cycles 24 hours a day. Our water supply comes from nearby springs but guests are advised not to drink from the taps. Kids of all ages are welcome to the lodge, special meals at convenient times and baby sitters are provided on request. Guest shops stock a wide selection of curios, gift items, clothing, film, sweets, postcards, personal requisites and toiletries. A swimming pool is situated on the very edge of the crater itself and the water is bracing, even invigorating to say the least, at any time of year. However, for those who would prefer the warmth of a shower or bath in their suite, the pool is a perfect area to unwind and relax while enjoying the views of the crater floor below or of the sunsets in the evenings.   Tarangire Sopa Lodge Completing the Northern Tanzania safari circuit the lodge, built as a ‘low profile’ structure, nestles into a wooded hillside valley overlooking Tarangire Hill. Situated 120km (75 miles) from Arusha, Tarangire National Park is easily accessible and boasts magnificent herds of elephant and other species of wildlife. The baobab studded landscape also plays host to a vast variety of resident and migratory bird life. Looking out over the rolling countryside the lodge is a tranquil oasis set in over 2,600 sq kms (900 sq miles) of National Park. The Tarangire flows north to south year-round and sustains an abundance of fauna and flora rarely seen elsewhere. Opened in 1995, the lodge can accommodate 160 guests in 75 suites, each enjoying wall-to-wall carpeting, a private lounge with a mini bar, a bedroom with two queen size beds and ample room for a third, an en-suite bathroom with shaver sockets and a hair dryer, and a private verandah which offers stunning views over the baobab studded landscape. The lodge has direct-dial satellite telephone facilities as well as satellite television and wildlife-video-film options. A number of lodge electrical generating systems provide 240volts, 50 cycles 24 hours a day. Our water supply comes from nearby springs but guests are advised not to drink from the taps. We welcome kids of all ages and can provide both special meals at convenient times and baby sitters on request. The Guest Shop stocks a wide selection of curios, gift items, clothing, film, sweets, postcards, personal requisites and toiletries. The unique swimming pool which is located at the edge of a rocky gorge has its own bar and snack kitchen and offers a refreshing interlude between game drives. We can supply diesel and can carry out most minor repairs.   Amboseli Serena Lodge Nestled in the foothills of Kilimanjaro, hidden beneath a copse of giant acacia trees and beside a gently flowing natural spring lies Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge. With Kilimanjaro’s 6,000-meter-high snow-capped peaks rising behind the lodge and presiding over the landscape, which boasts more big game than almost anywhere else in Africa, the setting is nothing short of magnificent. Inspired by local Masai architecture, the design of the lodge is in total harmony with the environment. Each guest room conveys a distinctive Masai Manyatta mood and is furnished with authentic African murals painted by a local artist. As part of Serena Hotels’ dedication to conserving the fragile environment of the African Bush, guests are invited to plant a tree to help reforestation of the land that was becoming barren from the herds of elephants tearing up the trees for food. Hundreds of trees have been planted to date. The lodge’s naturalist also gives informative talks on the environmental issues relating to the Amboseli National Park. The lodge has 96 beautifully appointed rooms and a swimming pool filled with fresh water from a spring flowing from Mount Kilimanjaro. Activities on offer include game drives three times a day, sundowners on Observation Hill, traditional feasts and tribal dancing overlooking a waterhole where big game gather, musical evenings and visits to the traditional Manyattas of the Amboseli Masai.
